Native Americans is the name given to the many groups of people who lived in America before Columbus landed there. Sometimes these groups have been called ‘Indians’ in the past because Columbus was looking for India, but this name is inaccurate.
Native Americans lived in groups called tribes. The lifestyles of these tribes were very different to the lifestyles of the European colonists. Native Americans valued community and sharing, but Europeans valued individualism and private ownership. Native Americans viewed nature with a lot of respect, but Europeans viewed nature as something they could use or control for their own benefit.
These differences often led to disagreements and fighting with colonists often taking drastic measures to kill or relocate Native Americans so they could take over their land. Though many Native Americans tragically died, some tribes still exist today as independent nations within the US.
