In 1492 the first European explorers set foot on North American soil. It had been home to Native Americans for thousands of years, but Europeans called it the New World. Throughout the 15th and 16th Centuries, the Netherlands, Britain, France and Spain attempted to colonize America. The British Empire had most success, but eventually some of their colonies became too successful, fought for independence and turned into the United States of America. Click an icon to find out more.
