The war in Europe ended in 1945. But an even greater war, without the use of battles and guns, was to start between two former allies. The period between 1945 and 1991 was called the Cold War and the two opposing sides were the United States of America and the West, against the USSR (the Soviet Union). Click on an icon below.

Like the Second World War before it, the cold war was subject to many world leader changes who each contributed to the main rivalry between capitalist America and communist Russia. Despite coming together against Germany at their time of need, by 1945 it was clear that the two countries had different foreign policy ambitions. Whilst Stalin sought to spread the communist ideology as wide and as far as possible, the USA leaders overwhelmingly attempted to contain it.
